LIFE - The Art of Drawing Without an Eraser

“Life is the art of drawing without an eraser,” someone once said, my father commented lately. Pondering over the truth of those words, I decided to come up with a piece of art without using an eraser.

While contemplating on what to draw, an image of a sun shining upon sunflowers came to my mind. So, I decided to draw just that. I wanted my art work to be unique- unlike my usual water colour or colour pencil sceneries. This time, it shall be some form of modern art, a little bit abstract, using mixed media, I decided.

So, I bought the materials which suited most closely to the glorious image I had in my mind. A dark green, very thick piece of paper and lots of gold and silver dust as well as glitters. And I began my art work. I didn't use an eraser at all and I spent about 6 hours on it.When I finally completed it, it didn't turn out exactly like what I had in mind, but I really loved it! And boy, I am so proud of it! A golden sun and golden sunflower with some silver here and there against the dark green background looked so glorious!

My father, who used to be an art teacher, said that my art work had a modern art look with a primitive touch. What I love the most about the piece is that it looks different from different angles- just as I intended it to look. I takes on varied hues depending on the amount of light it is exposed to because of the glitters. A pastor came to visit my family, and while looking at my artwork on the wall, he said that he felt like he was in heaven.

You must be thinking that I am so full of myself and my art! He he...my sister said that about me when I began admiring my art from different angles..Maybe I am, but I really can't help it... That's just me. Proud of the works of my hands. They may not be among the best in the world, but I managed to immortalize some things belonging to my heart and mind, and that matters a lot to me.

However, I was a little dissapointed after framing it up. It's about 60cm X 40cm with a dark green wooden frame. That was gorgeous, but some of the glitters had accidentally scattered to parts that they were not supposed to be. From a distance, it was unnoticable but close up- I could the spot flaws, glaringly, being the perfectionist that I am. Nevertheless, everyone at home consoled me saying that it was still beautiful.(It better be, because I put in a lot into it- heart, effort and money).

I had yet to give it a name until yesterday. While looking at my art, I thought that my life was like that – they way I worked on it and the way it turned out. To me, the sun and the rays it casts upon the sunflowers signified hope and life in God. There was supposed to be grass and the bottom of the picture but because I accidentally smeared the glitters and glue onto unintended parts of the picture, I turned the grass into something that looked like icicles with tiny silver flowers springing out.

My life's like that. Every now and then I make mistakes but I attempt my very best to take them positively, make ammends and make something beautiful out of it. And the glitters that got scattered to unintended parts when it was being framed were 'a touch of reality'. Sometimes, no matter how hard I try, things just don't turn out perfect or exactly like how I want it to be. But it's still beautiful, in a different way, if I choose to see it that way.

Truly, life is the art of drawing without an eraser. In life, we can't erase the mistakes we have made but we can continue to work on the masterpiece to create a thing of beauty. I have decided to name my artwork – 'Life'.
