My birthday and special little things

It’s been a while since I last posted something on my blog…there’s nothing so interesting going on in my life, as someone commented on me today. Anyway, I’ll just share some of the few so called highlights of my mundane routine.

It was my birthday on the 28th March. To all my friends who have extended your sweet wishes, thank you.It really made me smile. Your smses, emails, offline yahoo messenger messages, and even gifts given in the past on different occasions always remind me of you.

Usually, my birthday is just another day to me. I do thank God for his grace that has kept me alive and well all the years through and his love that will continue to guide me. Back in university, things were different; birthdays were special moments with friends. But apart from that, at home, I just cut the cake and eat something nice with my dearest family.

This year round, things were a little different. My little friends (ex-students) aged 6 and 10, came over to my place with their mom and dad after I got home from work. They actually saved their pocket money to buy me a gift each (really sweet kids). As usual, I cut the cake and we ate something nice, but the presence of children made it altogether different...with the kids feeding my pet dog some cake, and all of us laughing and playing…the funny things that only kids can do.

Those children are really special to me, and their presence was also very special because it was going to be some kind of a farewell. The family is from India and these 2 children were enrolled into the private school where I used to teach. They lived in the same row of houses as mine. When it was my first day at school, it was theirs too. I got to know them only at school and used to go to school with them. I was the 10 year old girl’s BM teacher and also her recess time company. And not too long after I left, they switched schools. Just a few days after my birthday, they moved to KL. Now, they are schooling in an international school there.

The 10 year old girl really reminds me of myself as a child, only that she is a lot braver than me as a kid. I think that’s why she likes me a lot too. Her mom told me that she chooses her friends, and mixes with only those that she likes. Her mom was very surprised that she got along so well with me in such a short time. As for the 6 year old boy, he loves to sing songs from the Sound of Music and is very talented in art. This little boy also told me that he knew me before he met me! He said that back in India, he had a story book with the character and picture of a girl named Joanna. He said, he knew in his heart that he would meet her one day, and he found me in Malaysia! (the things children say! coincidence, imagination...?)

With them, I also felt that I have the opportunity to re-live my days as a child. We would go the playground and play hide-and-seek, or we would take evening walks together with my sister and my dog. Back in the house, we used to have a lot of fun doing arts-and-crafts. Even my dog loves them. The children would come over to my house whenever they wished, much to our pleasure, like it was their second home. And likewise, my dog would sneak over to their place, where he was very welcome, whenever he had the opportunity.

Well, I sure do miss them a lot….the familiar voices calling ‘Jo, dhidhi! Are you at home?” And when I come downstairs, I would see no one, only to be surprised a few seconds later by a jump, a loud “Hi, Jo dhidhi!” and a sweet, smiling face, behind me. These children r brought cheers into my life during a time when I really need needed it, after returning home from university. I really thank God for letting their path cross mine, and I will always pray for them.

You know, people walk in and out of lives. Some stay for a short period of time, some for a season. Some for many years, and some just for months, weeks, days, hours or even less than that. The same holds true for us towards others. We also walk in and out of people’s lives. But everything has its own reasons and purposes although we may not realize it at that time. After they (or we) have fulfilled that purpose, they leave (or we leave). Some are destined to stay, till death does you part. But for the rest, even though at times I do have wishes for a lifetime, I just thank God for his fulfilled purposes.

I would like to conclude this post by saying, do not underestimate the little things that you do for God and others in the span of time that you have been given, in their lives. You may never know just how much you mean to that someone. And may the Lord help us not to miss the opportunity of fulfilling our purposes in the people He sends our way.
